Serena Williams has pulled out of her doubles match with her sister Venus at Wimbledon, citing a right knee injury. The 44-year-old sustained the injury during her singles match earlier in the week, where she lost in three sets.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Serena expressed her disappointment: “I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles. Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the chance to play alongside @venuswilliams once more meant the world to me. I did everything I could but unfortunately, my knee just isn’t ready to compete.”
Her post included images of four syringes that revealed the fluid drained from her knee after her singles match, and a video showed her with her leg bandaged, accompanied by one of her daughters holding a cane.
Although Serena missed out on this match, she hinted at the possibility of returning soon. “All I can say,” she remarked, “is stay tuned to a city near you.”
The Williams sisters were slated to face off against Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra. Their match had been postponed to allow Serena additional recovery time. Serena lost her singles match to 20-year-old Maya Joint of Australia, with scores of 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3. Meanwhile, Venus, aged 46, participated in the mixed doubles with partner Kevin Krawietz but lost to Tereza Mihalikova and Lloyd Glasspool.
The Williams sisters are six-time champions in the women’s doubles category at Wimbledon.
