Hollywood and the Stories of Medal of Honor Recipients

Hollywood has a recurring narrative. A lone hero faces daunting odds. A split-second decision alters the course of a battle, and a body endures against all expectations. This structure defines many war films. You likely recognize this pattern. Yet, this archetype wasn’t fabricated by screenwriters; it’s rooted in reality. Such stories are found time and again in Medal of Honor citations.

Medal of Honor tales are central to some of Hollywood’s most acclaimed war films. The inaugural recipients, the Andrews’ Raiders, experienced their daring Confederate train heist depicted in the 1956 film The Great Locomotive Chase. Audie Murphy, a Medal of Honor recipient, portrayed himself in To Hell and Back (1955), recreating his defense against German forces in 1945 France. Murphy went on to star in over 40 films.

More recently, Ridley Scott directed Black Hawk Down (2001), which recounts a harrowing day in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1993. Delta Force snipers Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart valiantly defended a downed helicopter pilot, knowing their position was untenable.

Not all stories adhere to this military film blueprint. Desmond Doss, a medic who opted against carrying a weapon, saved 75 soldiers during the Battle of Okinawa. His story is depicted in Hacksaw Ridge (2016) with Andrew Garfield. This film challenges traditional war movie motifs and won two Academy Awards.

Hollywood’s attraction to Medal of Honor stories isn’t solely due to their adventurous elements. The real draw is their authenticity. The men behind these stories lived through these extraordinary experiences.
