Local fans of Algeria’s national soccer team, based at the nearby University of Kansas for the tournament, gathered to celebrate before their match against Argentina. The presence of the Algerian team turned Lawrence into a vibrant hub, much to the delight of local businesses.
Every Sunday, protesters congregate near the ACME Hot and Fresh T-shirt store. Their motivations range from opposition to wars in Iran and Gaza to dissatisfaction with the White House and ICE. The protests spark reactions from passing drivers, some expressing support with honks and others voicing disagreement.
Despite the various protests, soccer fans in Lawrence unanimously support the Algerian team. David Sauter, co-owner of ACME Hot and Fresh, notes a high demand for Algerian-themed shirts. “Everybody wants an Algerian shirt in Lawrence,” he remarked, highlighting how the team’s presence has affected local commerce.
