A large group of masked individuals from the Patriot Front, a white nationalist organization, marched through Washington, D.C., on Saturday. Their presence coincided with the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations. Videos and photos on social media showed many men marching near Union Station and other city areas. The group dressed uniformly in navy-blue shirts, khaki pants, tan baseball caps, sunglasses, and white cloth face coverings. They carried American flags, Confederate flags, and various banners.
Their demonstration occurred during extensive Independence Day festivities, which attracted hundreds of thousands to Washington for events like military parades, concerts, and a significant fireworks display on the National Mall.
A Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) spokesperson confirmed in an email to Newsweek that authorities were “tracking First Amendment activities” in the Eastern Market neighborhood. The MPD emphasized the right to peaceful expression while maintaining public safety. No arrests were reported.
Understanding Patriot Front
Patriot Front is labeled by civil rights organizations and extremism researchers as a neo-fascist and white supremacist group. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) states that their ideology claims America belongs solely to European descendants.
The group is known for orchestrated flash demonstrations. Their website advocates for nonviolent disobedience and patriotic politics in public spaces. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) notes that Patriot Front formed in late 2017 after splitting from another neo-fascist group, Vanguard America, following the Charlottesville, Virginia rally where a counterprotester was killed. The SPLC tracks it as an active white nationalist group, driven by propaganda and flash marches.
Documents obtained by USA Today revealed over 540 members across all states except Hawaii as of early 2026. The group’s roster and related paperwork show that over half of its members joined in the past two years. There are also links to Active Clubs, where white supremacists combine mixed martial arts with propaganda.
Founder Thomas Ryan Rousseau recently encouraged members to stay fit and distribute propaganda. In a message, he expressed a goal of recruiting 600 members by July 4 for the anniversary celebration.
“This is a picked band of dedicated men that far exceeds any of our domestic contemporaries,” Rousseau wrote. He called for committed members willing to work and not just fight for the cause.
Patriot Front did not respond to Newsweek’s inquiry or attempts to contact Rousseau.
Ongoing Activities in Washington
Saturday’s march is part of a repeated pattern of demonstrations in and around Washington by the group. Patriot Front has appeared near significant events, like the annual March for Life. In May 2023, 150 members marched in downtown Washington with shields, flags, and banners. Recently, in May, members held an unannounced march in Virginia Beach, leading to condemnation from locals.
On Saturday, the group continued the procession under local law enforcement’s watch before dispersing amid crowded holiday celebrations.
