On Tuesday night, Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever stepped onto Canadian soil for the first time in her career, playing a game in Toronto. Facing constant boos from the crowd at Scotiabank Arena, Cunningham’s response was to shine on the court. She managed to sink all three of her three-point attempts, contributing to the Fever’s 101-95 victory over the Toronto Tempo.
The fervor against Cunningham in Toronto stems from her previous comments regarding the presence of transgender individuals in women’s locker rooms. She had expressed her belief in advocating for the protection of young girls, which led to a heated response from fans.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that.’ I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest,”
After the game, Cunningham expressed appreciation for the crowd, saying it added to the excitement of the sport.
“I want to shout out the Tempo crowd and the city. We’ve had so much fun. The crowd was absolutely amazing. I think that’s what sports is all about. You’re going to get boos and you’re going to get cheers,”
She emphasized that such reactions are a part of being involved in competitive sports and took the time to engage with fans, adding a touch of normalcy to her demeanor.
Despite the controversy, Cunningham seems intent on keeping her focus on basketball and encouraging young athletes to pursue their dreams.
