Pope Leo XIV Advocates for Immigration and Reflects on U.S. History

Pope Leo XIV addressed Americans in a virtual speech at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. He urged a return to the U.S.’s tradition of welcoming immigrants while he accepted the 2026 Liberty Medal for his dedication to religious freedom.

“In the past 250 years, America has become synonymous with freedom by opening its doors to waves of immigrants. These individuals and their descendants have played crucial roles in shaping the nation’s future,” said Pope Leo, the church’s first American Pope.

He highlighted the Declaration of Independence, signed in Philadelphia 250 years ago, emphasizing the self-evident truths that all men have fundamental rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Pope Leo, speaking as an American, expressed hope for God’s blessings on America’s future. He wished that the ideals in the Declaration of Independence continue to guide the nation in unity, justice, and peace.

During his private audience at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City, Pope Leo remarked, “This historic anniversary allows us to reflect on founding principles. The goal is for America to stay true to the dream of being the land of the free and home of the brave.” He consistently supports immigrant and migrant rights since becoming Pope in 2025.

Leo stated, “The moral greatness of a nation is revealed by its ability to support and protect all lives, especially the vulnerable and those whose worth is questioned.”

Post his address, the Pope traveled to Lampedusa, an island near Africa, where he continued to advocate for migrant acceptance. He pointed out the struggles migrants face, saying, “Thousands have fallen victim to harsh conditions and robbers, with many losing their lives trying to reach hoped-for destinations.”

The Pope spoke of indifference and corruption, pointing out societal and systemic issues causing poverty and exclusion. He criticized the lack of comprehensive migrant policies and urged Europe to address the crisis with strategic plans for migrant integration and development in origin countries.

“Europe can address this crisis by merging immediate relief with strategic long-term planning. This involves receiving, protecting, and supporting migrants while aiding developing nations,” he stated.

Pope Leo visited a key entry point for migrants in Lampedusa, urging a shift from vacation distractions to facing the migrant realities. He challenged others to think differently about the migrant crisis.

Leo often opposes Western leaders on immigration and war matters, notably President Donald Trump, who criticized him for his foreign policy stance. Vice President JD Vance also disagreed with the Pope’s public statements.
