Farewell to World Cup Legends: Ronaldo, Neymar, Ochoa, and Neuer Take Their Final Bows

The 2026 FIFA World Cup captivated audiences with surprising results and emotional victories. Some of the game’s legendary players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Guillermo Ochoa, and Manuel Neuer, competed in their final World Cup, leaving a lasting impact.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s journey ended after Portugal’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Spain on July 6, 2026, at Dallas Stadium. Since his first World Cup at age 21, Ronaldo played in six tournaments, a record shared only with Lionel Messi of Argentina. At 41, he was the second oldest player in the tournament, scoring three goals. Despite never winning a World Cup title, Ronaldo expressed gratitude for his career accomplishments, stating, “God has been so generous towards me. He has given me everything,” during a press meeting.

Neymar concluded his international career in New Jersey, where he first played in 2010. Despite a persistent calf injury, Neymar scored Brazil’s only goal in their 2-1 loss to Norway. After the match, he was visibly emotional and thanked his supporters, stating, “It started here at MetLife Stadium, and I finished here. It is now over.”

Guillermo Ochoa, Mexico’s experienced goalkeeper, played the last minutes of the tournament against England. At 40, he expressed contentment, saying, “I’ve enjoyed each moment here. I gave it my all.” England eliminated Mexico with a 3-2 victory. Ochoa bid farewell by kissing the goalpost and thanking fans.

Germany’s celebrated goalkeeper Manuel Neuer returned from retirement to help his team, although they only reached the Round of 32 after losing to Paraguay. Neuer expressed no regrets and emphasized his role in mentoring younger players, stating, “Despite the bitter ending, I don’t regret this step for a second.”

As these stars exit the international stage, Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez, retiring at 35, spoke on passing the torch, saying, “It is the new generation’s turn to play.” Mahrez leaves soccer as a five-time Premier League winner.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi, at age 39, returned to the World Cup stage, aiming for another triumph after winning in 2022. His pursuit of consecutive victories echoed Brazil’s legendary back-to-back wins in 1958 and 1962.
