Roman Guzman from Providence took part in the Gothia Cup in Sweden in July. This event is recognized as the largest and most internationally diverse youth soccer tournament globally. The junior defender returned home with newfound skills and enthusiasm.
“It was very different,” Guzman shared. “Traveling from America to Sweden, with an 18-hour flight, the moment I arrived, I sensed a change. The technical and physical aspects of the game were heightened. It was quite impressive.”
Guzman applied his new insights during Monday’s season opener. He contributed a goal and an assist as the Celtics dominated with a 7-0 victory over Joliet Catholic in a nonconference match. Jovanny Gonzalez was in great form for Providence, scoring two goals and assisting one. Teammates Billy Savarino, Christian Hofferica, Aldo Dominguez, and Chris Serrano also scored.
Aleksander Chavez and Caleb Pintar teamed up for the clean sheet, with Chavez making a penalty save. The defensive lineup of Guzman, Luca Bullion, Cameron Klene, James Nagle, and Cooper Wojcik restricted Joliet Catholic to one shot on target. Joliet’s Mark Vasecka made six saves during the match.
This match marked the 600th career win for Providence coach Mike Taylor. He admitted, “I don’t keep track, but Mike Stacy from our social media team mentioned it in the summer. I calculated and realized I was one win away from 600. That was a surprise. Coaching has brought me joy and keeps me energized.”
The Celtics set an early pace on Monday, establishing a 4-0 lead in the first half. Guzman netted his second varsity goal before halftime, capitalizing on a rebound after Leo Mendoza’s shot hit the post. “Scoring goals is thrilling, especially with this team,” Guzman expressed. “They are a fantastic group of guys, making celebrations with them memorable.”
Guzman’s Swedish experience was notably beneficial. He played with the LA Bulls from MLS Next. “The experience was profound,” he stated. “I led a group of new acquaintances as team captain and even secured an assist.”
Post-trip, Guzman feels prepared for a significant role with the Celtics. Previously, he had considered playing for Joliet Catholic, where he grew up. “I leaned toward JCA initially, but I have been friends with Jovanny Gonzalez since childhood,” Guzman said. “His encouragement led me to join the Celtics, and I am pleased with my decision.”
Jovanny Gonzalez is equally content with Guzman’s choice. “I’ve played with Roman since we began at the local park district,” Gonzalez remarked. “Convincing him to join was instinctive. He is dedicated and achieves his goals. His determination secured his spot on varsity. I consider him like a brother.”
Now, Guzman approaches his role with renewed determination and ambition for future opportunities on significant platforms. This journey began in Sweden, which he described as a seminal source of inspiration. “It sparked a change in me. My aim is to return to that level of play. It’s been a privilege to compete at such a high caliber,”
