Americans Concerned About AI’s Impact on Society

Americans exhibit notable concern over artificial intelligence (AI) integration in daily life. A survey conducted by Athena Insights, tracked this public sentiment, revealing that concerns about AI’s growing footprint in society are nearly three times greater than excitement.

According to the survey, which was disclosed to The Hill, a significant portion of Americans already hold opinions about AI, irrespective of their interactions with it. Specifically, 28% of the 1,814 surveyed expressed being ‘very concerned’ about AI’s increasing influence, while 37% felt ‘somewhat concerned.’ On the contrary, 6% reported feeling ‘very excited’ and 18% ‘somewhat excited.’ A small fraction either didn’t have an answer or felt the provided options weren’t representative of their feelings.

Interestingly, these sentiments transcended political affiliations, even as Democratic and Republican leaders in Washington differ on their approaches to the issue. The survey, intended to be carried out biweekly for the next year, aims to monitor shifts in people’s opinions about AI over time rather than providing isolated data points. Colin Hyatt Bortner, Athena Insights’ research lead, emphasized the aim for neutrality in the survey to accurately capture AI’s impacts, potentially driving policy change.

Bortner also pointed out the survey covers the perceived positive impacts of AI, including advancements in medical and scientific fields and healthcare improvements.

The analysis and findings of this survey highlight significant concerns over AI’s societal role, potentially shaping future policy decisions.
