Far-right leader Marine Le Pen announced her intention to run for the French presidency next year, despite being sentenced to wear an electronic monitor for embezzlement. As a veteran of three presidential races, Le Pen faces a unique challenge in her fourth campaign, as her sentence involves potential monitoring. She plans to appeal to France’s highest court, which, according to her, will suspend the sentence.
Le Pen declared in a television interview that she would campaign without an electronic bracelet. The appeals court recently shortened a previous ban preventing her from seeking public office, now allowing her to participate in the election. Le Pen expressed confidence that her appeal would be successful, enabling her to campaign freely.
Appeals Court Clears the Way
The appeals court ruling reduced Le Pen’s ban on public office from five years to 45 months, with a portion suspended. She has already served part of this ban, effectively removing an obstacle to her candidacy. Despite confirming her guilt in embezzling EU funds, the court reduced her prison sentence from four years to three, suspending two of them.
The situation mirrors former President Nicolas Sarkozy’s case, where an appeal also involved electronic monitoring. Le Pen vows to explore all legal routes to prove her innocence, confident the court will rule before the presidential election.
Implications for the National Rally Party
Le Pen promptly met with her party’s leadership, including Jordan Bardella, at their headquarters in Paris. Bardella was considered her potential successor as the party’s presidential candidate. However, Le Pen’s ability to run removes the need for a replacement.
The National Rally, formerly known as the National Front, has seen Le Pen on the ballot in numerous elections. Her conviction could lead to attacks from critics, but she intends to turn the verdict into a campaign message, emphasizing voter choice.
The court noted that Le Pen’s served ban addressed public integrity concerns, highlighting the importance of electoral freedom. This consideration underscores the essential democratic principle of allowing voters to express their will.
