Preliminary Hearing Developments in Tyler Robinson Case

In Provo, Utah, video testimony from Lance Twiggs will be played in court during a preliminary hearing concerning Tyler Robinson, who is accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk. Initially planned for Wednesday, the testimony’s play was delayed after defense objections. Judge Tony Graf Jr. called for redactions, prompting prosecutors to postpone it until Thursday to meet court requirements.

Charlie Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, shared emotional moments with her mother-in-law, Kathy Kirk, during the proceedings. Their family attorney, Jeff Neiman, requested the court to play the full, unredacted video to avoid public doubt in the judicial system. He argued that all evidence admitted should be public. Neiman emphasized the court has tools to ensure a fair trial, which can be used if necessary.

“The Kirk family believes strongly that if the evidence is being admitted in this preliminary hearing, it should be made public for the world to see no redactions,” said Neiman.

Despite these arguments, Judge Graf agreed to defense-proposed redactions, cutting approximately 16 minutes from the 37-minute video. Concerns were raised about potential impacts of televising perceived confessions before trial.

The video is anticipated to cover discussions about texts, chat logs, and a note seen as a possible confession from Robinson. Defense attorney Richard Novak does not classify these elements as a confession. During the hearing, Robinson exhibited signs of unease, especially when former lover Twiggs was mentioned. He appeared visibly affected by references to his alleged involvement in the shooting that took place in Orem.

Some texts, already public, suggest Robinson acknowledged being “stuck in Orem” and implies his role in the shooting. These texts are expected to be omitted from Thursday’s video but will be considered in the probable cause decision.

The hearing is scheduled to conclude by 5 p.m. Friday, dispelling speculation of an extended duration. After court adjourned, Erika and Kathy Kirk shared a tearful embrace.
