Patrick Dempsey Declines to Enter Maine Senate Race

Patrick Dempsey, famous for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ has announced he will not run for the Senate in Maine. His decision comes amid rumors he might replace embattled Democratic nominee Graham Platner.

Platner is considering leaving the race following new sexual assault allegations, which he denies. Despite the controversy, Platner has lost vital support from key Congressional backers.

Dempsey addressed his decision in a Portland Press Herald op-ed. ‘I kept asking: Do I want to serve in Congress?’ he wrote. ‘After much thought, my answer is no.’ He emphasized his respect for public service but feels he can better contribute through his current endeavors.

Before these developments, a Tavern Research survey identified Dempsey as a contender. Other potential candidates included former state Senate President Troy Jackson and Nirav Shah, ex-director of Maine’s CDC. Both have previously lost gubernatorial primary bids.

Jackson has taken initial steps to enter the race, filing exploratory paperwork. Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, also considering a run, competed in the Democratic gubernatorial primary.

Additional figures expressing interest in the Senate seat are state Rep. Valli Geiger and House Speaker Ryan Fecteau. However, none have confirmed their candidacy yet.

Dempsey shared that requests for his candidacy have been frequent in recent days, which he finds flattering. Despite his love for Maine and concern for national issues, he prefers to impact his community through the Dempsey Center. The center focuses on cancer support, established in memory of Dempsey’s mother.

‘The Dempsey Center has taught me what’s possible when differences are set aside for common goals,’ Dempsey noted. ‘This approach reflects the America I know and want in our leadership.’

Should Platner exit the race by Monday, the state Democratic Party has until July 27 to replace him.
