Tragic Accident Involving Illegal Immigrant in North Carolina

An illegal immigrant from Mexico, Jaime Santiago Corona, was involved in a tragic accident in North Carolina. He was driving with a revoked license when his vehicle collided with another, resulting in the death of a 6-year-old girl, authorities reported.

On July 3, Corona was operating a Dodge Ram pickup in Pitt County. He failed to stop at a stop sign and hit an SUV driven by 35-year-old Kelli Toler. Toler was with her two children. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol noted that the collision severely injured Toler and her 4-year-old child. Tragically, Toler’s 6-year-old daughter, Calli, died at the scene.

Corona, who has been deported three times, faces charges including misdemeanor death by vehicle, failure to stop at a stop sign, careless and reckless driving, and driving with a revoked license. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), he illegally re-entered the U.S. three times, which constitutes a felony. His record includes offenses such as negligent manslaughter with a vehicle, DUI, and multiple traffic violations.

A spokesperson from the DHS, Lauren Bis, commented on the preventable nature of this tragedy, highlighting the profound loss suffered by Calli Toler’s family. The family was reportedly headed to lunch before visiting a swimming pool at the time of the incident.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued a detainer hold for Corona. The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office confirmed their cooperation with ICE on this matter.
