A small West Virginia town, Barrackville, finds itself in the midst of a controversy after its entire police department was suddenly dismissed following the resignation of its police chief. This move has led to public backlash, accusations of government overreach, and increasing demands for clarity.
The Barrackville Police Department announced on Facebook that the mayor and city council had relieved all officers of duty immediately. The department expressed gratitude towards the community for their support during its service.
In December 2025, Zachary Freeburn was appointed as the new police chief. He was commended for his academic background and professional qualifications, including graduating from the West Virginia State Police Academy.
His leadership aimed to strengthen the department and serve the community better. However, the effort unraveled within seven months, culminating in Freeburn’s resignation. The department assured continued operations under the leadership of Sgt. Hunt.
Freeburn detailed his resignation in a letter intended for the now-canceled town council meeting, alleging council interference with police department operations. He argued this was against West Virginia laws governing municipal police departments. He described the situation as hostile, leading to his departure.
In response, Barrackville residents initiated a petition urging the reinstatement of Freeburn, citing a loss of public trust and transparency issues. Residents planned to voice concerns at the town council meeting, which was canceled due to insufficient information.
Sgt. Hunt made claims about the evidence room being improperly accessed by town officials. These allegations have not been independently verified.
Barrackville, home to about 1,200 people, now relies on Marion County’s Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement services. Despite various allegations, town officials have yet to provide explanations regarding the department’s dismissal. Fox News Digital is seeking comments from relevant authorities on the situation.
