Family Calls for Inquiry into ICE Shooting of Mexican Man

The family of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican man shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Houston, is demanding answers from Trump administration officials. Salgado Araujo died at the hospital after a confrontation with federal immigration officers on Tuesday morning.

ICE stated that the encounter occurred as part of a targeted enforcement operation. They attempted to pull over Salgado Araujo, who allegedly rammed an ICE vehicle and threatened the officer by seemingly using his van as a weapon. An ICE spokesperson explained that the officer acted in self-defense.

His son, Ronaldo Salgado, described his father as a ‘man of routine’ who was a hardworking business owner striving to provide his family the American dream. On the day of the incident, Salgado Araujo was reportedly heading to a project. Three other individuals, including his brother, were detained.

“My father did not deserve this,” Ronaldo declared on Facebook. Both the DHS Office of Inspector General and the FBI are investigating the events surrounding the shooting.

Ronaldo Salgado learned of the incident from his mother, who informed him ‘something bad happened’ and suspected ICE involvement. Ronaldo detailed how he rushed to the scene and recognized his father’s voice in a Facebook video, pleading for help after being shot.

He lamented the loss of his father, who spent over two decades building homes in Houston’s suburbs and was nearing legal immigration status. Salgado Araujo recently finished building a home for the family and enjoyed meals on the porch he constructed.

Activists, including the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), are petitioning for full transparency regarding the shooting. LULAC officials cited parallels between DHS’s statement about Salgado Araujo and the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis earlier this year. They criticized the federal agency for repeating the same narrative, urging the release of all evidence.

Houston’s mayor, alongside state officials, has called for a thorough investigation, noting the city lacks access to pertinent evidence for conducting an independent probe. The matter is considered ‘tragic and complex,’ with a demand for transparency and independence.

Public figures like Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones and Houston City Councilwoman Dr. Letitia Plummer expressed concerns over the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement practices. They linked the incident to similar cases in Minnesota, questioning the reliability of ICE’s account.

U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia vowed to pursue a comprehensive investigation for clarity on why Salgado Araujo was targeted. Garcia emphasized the importance of finding answers about the authorization and execution of the operation.
