Police in Cape Town are investigating the death of Jayden Adams, a South African World Cup soccer player. Adams’ body was found over the weekend at a property in Cape Town. He was 25 years old.
Two weeks before his death, Adams played a key role in helping South Africa reach the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
The local police registered an inquest for investigation. They discovered Adams’ body at a property in the Schotsche Kloof neighborhood around 11 a.m. on Saturday. No further details have been provided by authorities.
“Cape Town central police registered an inquest for investigation following the discovery of the body of a 25-year-old male on Saturday,” police said in a statement. “Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.”
Adams’ father, Juanito Adams, explained to eNCA, a South African TV news station, that the family awaits autopsy results. They have not arranged the funeral yet.
“As you all know, it was an untimely death. The family is struggling to process it,” Juanito Adams stated. “It won’t be easy to carry on. People say it will become easier, but it won’t. You just learn to live with it.”
Jayden Adams participated in South Africa’s three group matches, contributing to the team’s best World Cup performance. He did not play in the 1-0 defeat to Canada on June 28 in the round of 32.
South Africa Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie highlighted Adams’ commitment. Adams played against the Czech Republic shortly after his grandmother passed away. McKenzie urged the public and media to respect the investigation process and not speculate on the cause of his death.
During the World Cup quarterfinal games between England vs. Norway and Argentina vs. Switzerland, moments of silence and tributes were dedicated to Adams.
