A shooting spree in southern Illinois has resulted in the arrest of two teenagers and the death of five family members. Police have taken a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old into custody. The authorities have not disclosed their names or genders.
The connection between the suspects and the victims remains unclear. However, Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly confirmed that at least one suspect is related to the victims. He stated, “One of them is.” The victims were part of a family in East St. Louis.
In total, seven family members were shot at various locations in East St. Louis. Five victims have succumbed to their injuries. The deceased include Cherie L. May, 49; Devin D. May, 24; Patricia A. May, 74; Quentin L. Thompson, 21; and Shania W. Thompson, 25.
Patricia May worked at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as an office support associate. She joined the university on July 21, 1986, and retired on December 31, 2011.
The shootings occurred at three locations within a close proximity to each other. These locations were near Summit Avenue and North 39th Street, the Samuel Gompers Homes, and Jones Park. They have not released the exact timeline of these events.
Chris Allen, a spokesperson for the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office, explained that restrictions by the Illinois Supreme Court limit the comments that the prosecutor’s office can make, particularly involving juveniles.
