Darline Graham Nordone, recently appointed to fill the Senate term left vacant by her late brother, Lindsey Graham, navigates an unfamiliar political landscape. Though new to office, Nordone has long supported her brother’s career, attending speeches, appearances, and campaign events.
Nordone’s deep connection to her brother stems from shared personal history. After both parents passed away within a short time frame, Graham, at age 22, assumed legal guardianship of his 13-year-old sister. As South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed Nordone to hold Graham’s seat until January, she now champions the causes he fervently advocated.
A special primary occurring next month will determine the Republican candidate to face Democratic contender Annie Andrews in November’s general election.
Graham Became His Sister’s Guardian
Lindsey Graham’s life changed dramatically in his early 20s. Their mother died in 1976 from Hodgkin’s lymphoma, then their father succumbed to a heart attack 15 months later. Graham, in law school at the University of South Carolina, shifted his focus to ensure his sister’s well-being.
“I remember the day my father died, standing in the living room, terrified,” Nordone shared with NPR in 2015. “Lindsey embraced me, promising to always care for me.”
Graham regularly traveled from Columbia to Seneca, monitoring his sister’s welfare and eventually adopting her to include her in his military benefits as a military lawyer.
Strong Bond Between Siblings
Graham, unmarried and childless, jested during his 2016 presidential campaign that his sister could occasionally act as First Lady. This bond was evident in public appearances, where Nordone often accompanied him. In March, when filing his candidacy for this year’s election, Nordone stood by him with her children and grandchildren.
“From our journey, I’ve learned to never take life for granted,” Graham remarked. “My blessings compel me to be a thoughtful, active senator.” Nordone’s personal achievements proved significant to her brother. Graham once noted that her success was the highlight of his own life.
Bob McAlister, a former campaign consultant, observed their adversity-fueled connection. “Growing up with nothing at the back of the bar instilled a drive in Graham that many don’t comprehend,” McAlister explained.
Nordone’s role in Graham’s campaigns appeared throughout his career, even participating in a 2014 campaign ad emphasizing Graham’s commitment after their parents’ death. “He never failed me. It came from within him,” she shared.
Trump Endorsed Nordone for the Appointment
Just before McMaster’s announcement, President Donald Trump supported Nordone’s appointment on social media, describing it as a “fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly.”
