Spain’s Confidence Ahead of World Cup Semifinal Against France

Spain’s team faces a crucial match against France in the 2026 FIFA men’s World Cup semifinals on Tuesday, July 14. Confidence is high among the squad. Star winger Lamine Yamal, aged 19, declared last week, “If France should fear anyone, it’s us. We have knocked them out. We have beat them two times.” Yamal emphasized that both teams are the best in the tournament and dismissed any fear.

Yamal is a prominent player, scoring once in his World Cup debut. However, his skills cannot be measured solely by goals. Observers need to watch him in action to recognize his talent. Spain’s manager, Luis de la Fuente, predicts a significant moment for Yamal at the World Cup. “I’d tell Lamine to stay calm, to enjoy it, and above all, to set aside any anxiety,” he mentioned during a press conference on Monday, July 13. He expects Yamal to shine, possibly in the upcoming match or in the final.

Pressure to perform lies with France. Despite having the strongest attack in the tournament, including Kylian Mbappé with eight goals, Spain boasts the best defense. They have conceded only once, during their 2-1 quarterfinal victory over Belgium. However, France presents a formidable challenge, led by Mbappé, who has an impressive record of 20 goals in 20 World Cup matches. Notably, France hasn’t allowed a goal since the knockout stage began.

The upcoming encounter marks the third significant clash between France and Spain since 2024. Spain previously defeated France in the 2024 European Championships semifinal and again in the 2025 Nations League semifinal before falling to Portugal. Despite past victories, Spain remains cautious. “France are much better now than what they were when we faced them before,” stated de la Fuente. “Individually, they have grown. Mbappé is better, [Ousmane] Dembélé is better. As a team, they are better. We have also improved as well.”

France aims for their third consecutive World Cup final, having won in 2018 and lost to Argentina in 2022. Spain hopes to claim their first title since 2010. Meanwhile, Argentina and England compete in the other semifinal. This tournament is notable as the top four FIFA-ranked teams are the final contenders. The championship awaits its victor on Sunday, July 19.
