President Emmanuel Macron of France recently hosted European allies at the annual Bastille Day parade in Paris. This event demonstrated Europe’s intention to assert its independence from American foreign policy. Vehicles from the French Army’s Ninth Marine Infantry Brigade made their presence felt on the historic Champs-Élysées during the parade.
President Macron’s outreach to President Trump in 2017 aimed to secure Europe’s security. This year’s parade, featuring leaders from two dozen countries, symbolized a shift towards European self-reliance. The showcase was not merely a display of French military strength, as nearly 500 troops from 35 nations participated. These troops are part of a coalition led by France and Britain, designed to secure Ukraine following any potential cease-fire with Russia.
While Macron’s past engagement with Trump saw partial success, his current efforts to distance Europe from America remain unfinished. The parade highlighted Europe’s support for Ukraine. However, renewed tensions between the United States and Iran underscored the continent’s limitations. Europe’s pledge to deploy a maritime security force in the Strait of Hormuz has stalled. This force was intended to reopen the strait and ensure commercial passage, yet it remains unfulfilled and appears increasingly captive to global events.
For Europe, the Hormuz mission represents a significant test of its ability to protect its interests. Jeremy Shapiro, director at the European Council on Foreign Relations, remarked that despite discussions, the initiative has made little headway.
