Darline Graham, a Republican from South Carolina, has made history by becoming the first female senator from the Palmetto State. Her appointment marks several notable firsts in the Senate, including being the first sister to take a seat in the chamber. Graham fills the vacancy left by her late brother, Senator Lindsey Graham.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Darline Graham expressed her dedication to carrying on her brother’s legacy. “Lindsey has always been there for me, and now I will be there for him,” she remarked. She praised her brother’s leadership and character.
“It is such a privilege to get to finish some of his important work, and I promise to work hard over the next several months to support the president and carry forward the efforts of my brother on behalf of the citizens of South Carolina and the United States,” she said.
Although she has not previously held elected office, Darline Graham has been involved in her brother’s political career, attending campaigns and swearing-in ceremonies. In 2015, Lindsey Graham commented on her potential role in his administration, saying she would be a great representative for the country.
Her appointment was swift. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster selected her to complete her brother’s term, following President Donald Trump’s recommendation. Senator Tim Scott also showed support by meeting with her prior to her appointment.
“Lindsey took care of his little sister in years long departed. It’s my honor to ask his little sister, Darline Graham, to finish his work for him now,” McMaster said.
Darline Graham will serve as a caretaker for the seat until January, when a new senator will be chosen. Meanwhile, the contest for Lindsey Graham’s permanent replacement in the GOP is already underway. Prominent figures like Representatives Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman have expressed interest in the race, scheduled for August 11.
Former President Trump has yet to announce his endorsement but has previously shown interest in Representative Russell Fry. Fry was backed by Trump in his run for the House in 2022, successfully defeating former Representative Tom Rice.
Republicans also face the challenge of reassigning Lindsey Graham’s committee positions. Senate Majority Leader John Thune acknowledged that deciding these matters remains a priority.
“Obviously, his sister will be sworn in today, and then we’ll figure out which of his committees she wants to stay on, and then we’ll go from there,” Thune said.
