Country music artist Rory Feek recently opened up about a frightening medical emergency concerning his daughter, Indiana. Just weeks following her open-heart surgery, Indiana faced a sudden health crisis requiring urgent airlift to a hospital. Feek shared his experience in an emotional Substack post, shedding light on the ordeal.
Initial Signs and Diagnosis
Indiana, born with a congenital heart defect diagnosed shortly after her birth in 2014, initially showed symptoms that Feek and his wife Rebecca misinterpreted as routine illness. The situation escalated rapidly, leaving them fearing for her life. Feek recounted how Indianapolis started feeling unwell with what seemed like a headache and progressed rapidly overnight leading to vomiting and collapse.
“It started with a headache in the afternoon, and then a cough in the middle of the night,” Feek wrote. He described how what appeared to be a stomach bug soon turned into a perilous emergency.
The Health Scare
Indiana was initially rushed to a hospital in Waco, Texas. However, doctors determined she required specialized care, and she was transported by helicopter to Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin.
Feek explained the critical situation, mentioning how inflammation from her recent surgery caused fluid buildup around her heart. This impeded its function, leading to her collapse and symptoms of vomiting, a reaction to the lack of oxygen.
Emergency Response and Recovery
Immediate medical intervention was crucial. Surgeons removed 610 cc of fluid from Indiana’s heart, significantly alleviating the issue. Feek expressed immense relief at the positive outcome, noting her return to activity and the doctors’ optimistic prognosis for her recovery.
Feek shared a photo showing Indiana smiling in her hospital bed, symbolizing hope for future stability.

Background and Previous Operations
This scare followed recent corrective heart surgery for Indiana due to complications linked to her congenital defect. Feek narrated the discovery of the heart defect shortly after her birth, emphasizing the prevalence of heart issues in children with Down syndrome, according to the National Down Syndrome Society.
The singer recounted Indiana’s initial surgery and discharge positively, thanking medical staff for her progress.
Personal Impact on the Feek Family
Feek underscored the emotional strain during this period. Balancing family matters and health challenges took a toll. In addition to Indiana, he is a father to adult daughters Heidi and Hopie from his previous marriage. Recently, a DNA test revealed Feek is not Hopie’s biological father, causing further family tension.
Despite these familial challenges, Feek remains devoted to documenting family life and Indiana’s journey through his Substack posts.
