Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of “The Odyssey” marks a monumental project for everyone involved. The production journeyed across the globe to authentically recreate the story of Odysseus’ return home. Here’s what you need to know about “The Odyssey,” which hits theaters on Friday.
Film Duration
The runtime of “The Odyssey” is 172 minutes, slightly shorter than Nolan’s previous film “Oppenheimer,” which ran for 180 minutes. Nolan noted, ‘It’s an epic film, as the subject matter demands, but it is shorter.’ This film takes the viewer on a journey in 2 hours and 52 minutes.
Shooting Schedule
Filming took place over a span of six months, with an efficient schedule set for 100 days. Remarkably, the production concluded in 91 days. Nolan explained, ‘After 100 days, returns diminish. We’re all exhausted. We finished early thanks to optimal weather and conditions for particular shots.’
Location Settings
The movie was filmed across six countries, capturing scenes in Greece, Italy, Morocco, Iceland, Scotland, and the United States. Nolan emphasized the importance of real locations to create a documentary-like realism, especially in scenes like those of stormy seas.
Cast Collaborations
This film marks the third collaboration between Nolan and actors Anne Hathaway and Matt Damon. Hathaway featured in “The Dark Knight Rises,” Damon in “Oppenheimer,” and both starred in “Interstellar.”
IMAX Filming
The production utilized 2.1 million feet of 70mm IMAX film, surpassing the distance between Toronto and New York. Nolan described the immersive experience offered by the large screen format, allowing audiences to feel 3D effects without glasses.
IMAX Film Challenges
Shooting with an IMAX camera allows about 2.5 to 3 minutes of continuous shooting before reloading. This limitation kept the set focused. Actress Lupita Nyong’o noted, ‘It’s an expensive camera. You have to use your time efficiently.’
Costume Design
The film featured 5,300 costumes, crafted by a team led by designer Ellen Mirojnick. The team included 175 artisans in Los Angeles and over 500 people worldwide.
Musical Score
Composer Ludwig Göransson integrated traditional instruments like aulos and lyre with 35 rented gongs, creating a unique soundscape. Nolan aimed for an earthy feel, instructing Göransson to invent sounds drawn from the material world’s essence.
Siege of Troy
The battle scene depicting Troy’s siege involved 2,000 extras, which left a strong impact on the cast. Actor Himesh Patel reflected on the massive scale and chaos of the scene.
Trojan Horses
Trojan Horses used in production measured 35 feet high. Though the exact number remains unclear, multiple horses were constructed.
Filming in Ithaca
Shooting in Ithaca involved a daily 45-minute uphill trek to Castello di Santa Caterina. Actor John Leguizamo managed the hike only once, opting for helicopter transport afterward.
Odysseus’ Ship
The Draken Harald Hårfagre, a Viking longship replica, portrayed Odysseus’ vessel. It measures 115 feet long and features 25 pairs of oars. Actors attended a rowing camp to prepare for these scenes.
Cyclops Scene
Nestor’s Cave in Greece, where the Cyclops encounter was filmed, has a 95-foot ceiling. The Cyclops design was inspired by Goya’s art, with a unique vertical eye design.
The Poem
Nolan consulted numerous translations and adaptations of the 12,109-line poem while writing the screenplay.
Award-Winning Cast
The cast includes four Oscar-winners: Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, and Matt Damon, who also earned recognition for screenplay writing.
IMAX Showings
“The Odyssey” will be shown in 32 locations across the U.S. and Canada via IMAX 70mm – Nolan’s preferred format. Some key locations in New York and Los Angeles are already selling out.
Ticket Pricing
An IMAX 70mm experience costs $31.99 at the Regal King of Prussia. The average premium movie ticket price is currently $18.22, compared to $15.85 in 2022.
Production Budget
With a production budget of $250 million, “The Odyssey” joins the ranks of major blockbusters. However, this is not Nolan’s highest expenditure; “The Dark Knight Rises” takes that title.
Merchandise Pricing
The Trojan Horse popcorn bucket is priced at $69.95 at Cinemark theaters and has reached $115 on eBay.
