An ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) officer in Missouri has been commended by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for providing crucial medical aid to a driver injured in a severe crash.
According to DHS, the officer, Curtland Sawyer, noticed the accident involving a vehicle and a tractor-trailer near Festus, Missouri, while heading home on July 11. Sawyer, assigned to ICE’s St. Louis sub-office, immediately responded to the scene.
Sawyer’s quick actions included applying a tourniquet to the driver’s arm to control critical bleeding. He stayed with the injured driver until emergency medical technicians reached the site to deliver further care.
Lauren Bis, DHS Assistant Secretary, stated, “ICE law enforcement officer Curtland Sawyer immediately delivered lifesaving medical care to a driver involved in a serious collision. Officer Sawyer is a hero.” Bis added, “Our officers are the best of the best. When they see someone in need, they don’t hesitate to spring to action to help. If you see an ICE law enforcement officer, thank them for their service to our nation.”
Sawyer’s heroics are part of several recent life-saving incidents highlighted by DHS. Last month, another ICE officer saved a 6-year-old child by jumping into a Florida swimming pool and performing CPR. Additionally, ICE officers in Milwaukee rescued a woman from her overturned vehicle following a crash caused by a red-light violation.
