Cody Bellinger Shines as All-Star Game MVP

Cody Bellinger earned the prestigious All-Star Game MVP title on Tuesday night during an eventful match in Philadelphia. Despite the local crowd’s displeasure towards the New York Yankees, stemming from the 2009 World Series rivalry with the Philadelphia Phillies, Bellinger managed to turn the jeers into admiration.

With Aaron Judge and Byron Buxton both sidelined due to injuries, Bellinger took the starting spot in right field. His performance was crucial in the American League’s 4-0 victory over the National League at Citizens Bank Park. In the first inning, facing National League Cy Young contender Cristopher Sánchez, Bellinger connected with a sinker, delivering a two-run single to center field. This hit set the tone for what was otherwise a quiet game. He completed the match 1-for-3 with two RBIs, securing the MVP award.

During the post-game presentation, Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt, a veteran 12-time All-Star, presented Bellinger with the MVP award amid applause from his family and fans. This accolade marked the third time a Yankee has won the All-Star Game MVP, and the first since Giancarlo Stanton in 2022.

Bellinger received support from his Yankees teammate Ben Rice, who also contributed with an RBI single in the first inning, increasing the lead to 3-0 for the American League. The game saw little additional action, with Miguel Vargas of the Chicago White Sox hitting a solo home run in the eighth inning as the only other scoring play.

This marked Bellinger’s second year with the Yankees and his first All-Star appearance since his National League MVP season in 2019 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. This season, he maintains a 114 OPS+ while consistently providing solid defense. His tenure with the Yankees continues after signing a five-year, $162.5 million contract to stay in New York.
