Senators Push to Honor Graham’s Legacy with Russia Sanctions Bill

Senator Dave McCormick from Pennsylvania highlights a bipartisan effort to pass a Russia sanctions bill. This initiative aims to increase pressure on Vladimir Putin to end the Ukraine war. McCormick also discusses President Donald Trump’s address at the Pennsylvania Defense and Innovation Summit on ‘Fox & Friends.’

Former Vice President Mike Pence has urged Congress to honor Senator Lindsey Graham by renaming Graham’s signature Russia sanctions legislation after the late senator. Pence stated that this tribute would reflect Graham’s influential role in national security and his support for Ukraine and America’s allies.

In an interview, Pence described Graham’s efforts to impose stronger sanctions against Russia as part of his legislative legacy. He believes Congress should seize this opportunity to pass Graham’s bipartisan sanctions package and present it to President Trump with the senator’s name attached.

Pence emphasized that Graham recognized Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a significant geopolitical challenge and stressed the need for economic pressure to negotiate with Putin.

Having traveled to Ukraine twice since the invasion, Pence acknowledged Graham’s understanding of Ukraine as a “frontier of freedom.” Graham consistently urged both Republican and Democratic administrations to support America’s allies.

When asked about the potential of the sanctions legislation marking Graham’s greatest achievement, Pence agreed it could define the senator’s legacy.

Graham’s Legacy

Graham’s advocacy extended to Israel, Ukraine, and a stronger NATO alliance. Throughout his career, he remained consistent in these efforts. He was instrumental in encouraging NATO allies to increase defense spending during Trump’s first administration and was a staunch advocate for Israel.

Pence fondly recalls his last conversation with Graham at Reagan National Airport, where Graham’s focus quickly shifted to Ukraine sanctions. The brief encounter underscored Graham’s seriousness about policy.

Remembering Graham

Pence learned of Graham’s passing and expressed deep sadness. He first got to know Graham during the Republican Revolution of the 1990s and worked with him in Congress and under the Trump administration.

Pence hopes Congress will complete Graham’s work by passing the Russia sanctions bill, which he believes would be a fitting tribute to Graham’s life and vision.

The White House has not yet commented on this initiative.
