An unfortunate incident occurred in San Francisco Bay on Tuesday, resulting in the sinking of a recreational boat and the loss of at least one life. The sinking was triggered when a wave struck the vessel, causing it to roll onto its side before submerging, officials revealed on Wednesday.
Out of the 20 individuals on the boat, 16 were successfully rescued on the same day. However, three individuals remain unaccounted for. The Sad news of the death emerged when Clifford Joseph Boisa, 79, from Sutter County, near Sacramento, was pulled ashore in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries.
According to authorities, the group aboard the boat comprised close friends and family. They had gathered in the bay’s waters to honor and scatter the ashes of a loved one.
The United States Coast Guard, during a news conference, provided insights into how the three-deck, 49-foot cabin cruiser came to rest at the bottom of the bay. Captain Jarod Toczko explained that the boat named Volare lost its stability after being struck by a wave, leading to several individuals going overboard as the vessel listed to its right side. The sudden tilt of the boat likely disoriented those on board.
Once the boat tilted, it began intake of water. Rescue efforts commenced around 3:30 p.m., but by then, the two lower levels of the boat had already drowned.
