2026 ESPY Awards Highlights

The 2026 ESPY Awards took place at the David H. Koch Theater in New York, hosted by Marcello Hernandez from “Saturday Night Live.” Jalen Brunson was the star of the night, receiving a warm reception for his significant achievements.

Brunson, a key player for the New York Knicks, claimed the “Best Championship Performance” and “Best Athlete — Men’s Sports” awards. He was instrumental in leading the Knicks to their first NBA championship since 1973. During the Finals, he averaged 32.6 points, along with 4.6 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.2 steals. His regular season was also impressive, with averages of 26.0 points and 6.8 assists.

Brunson expressed gratitude to his family and teammates during his acceptance speech, highlighting the team’s collective effort in their triumph.

Jim Abbott, a former MLB pitcher known for playing without a right hand, was honored with the “Jimmy V Award for Perseverance.” Abbott reflected on his experiences and the sense of belonging that sports offered him.

Figure skater Alyssa Liu earned the “Best Breakthrough Athlete” award after her Olympic gold medal performance. She shared insights on overcoming challenges and the personal milestones she achieved in her sport.

Steph Curry, representing the Golden State Warriors, received the “Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian” award. His foundation, “Eat, Learn, Play,” has greatly benefited children in Oakland. Curry emphasized the importance of athletes using their platforms for community service.

Recognition in college sports went to Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza and UCLA basketball star Lauren Betts. Betts, highlighting mental health, stressed its critical role in achieving success.

The “Pat Tillman Award for Service” was awarded to Scott Ruskan, a Coast Guard member and former cross-country athlete, who participated in rescuing 165 Texas flood survivors. He praised the collective efforts involved in the rescue.
