The United States has increased its military strikes against Iran, hitting targets further north and firing on a ship it accused of attempting to breach its naval blockade. In retaliation, Iran launched missile and drone attacks on Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait, warning of possible escalation.
The ongoing hostilities between the U.S. and Iran have jeopardized the interim peace deal aimed at ending the Iran war. The conflict could escalate into a full-scale war in the region. Iran claims U.S. strikes have resulted in over 35 deaths and more than 300 injuries.
American strikes have extended to areas around Tehran, marking the first time these locations have been targeted in this conflict. The war initially began on February 28 when the U.S. and Israel launched attacks prompting Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz, affecting global oil prices. Colonel Ebrahim Zolfaghari, a spokesperson for Iran’s military, responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats by asserting that Iran would devastate regional infrastructure if provoked.
Zolfaghari stated, “We will not permit America, an external power, to interfere in the Strait of Hormuz,” emphasizing it as Iran’s inviolable boundary. Rising prices pose challenges for Trump and his party, facing elections in November. Despite Washington’s efforts, reopening the waterway has failed, leading Trump to reimpose the naval blockade.
Despite mediations, tensions remain high. Trump expressed optimism about reaching a peace settlement yet did not offer details. He noted a recent goodwill gesture from Iran with the release of an American citizen detained since 2024. Human rights lawyer Jared Genser identified her as Dena Karari, a U.S.-Iranian citizen accused of espionage.
Iranian reactions to the claimed release are unknown. Meanwhile, U.S. strikes targeted both Tehran and Semnan province, a hub for ballistic missile production. Other Iranian regions like Hamedan, Hormozgan, Khuzestan, Lorestan, Markazi, and Sistan and Baluchestan also reported American attacks.
The U.S. expanded operations by attacking Greater Tunb Island, a strategic site in the Strait of Hormuz. It also engaged the Curacao-flagged tanker Belma near Kharg Island, crippling it after ignored warnings. Additional strikes hit Iranian military installations, resulting in casualties.
Iran retaliated with attacks on Gulf region countries hosting U.S. forces. These hostilities follow a pattern of regional attacks initiated by Iran near Oman’s monitored shipping routes.
Reopening the Strait of Hormuz challenges the U.S., potentially demanding significant military resources. Currently, oil prices rise amidst the conflict, with Brent crude exceeding $85 per barrel, a substantial increase since the war began.
