Parents of AAU basketball players who are accustomed to paying high fees to watch their children compete faced an unexpected situation in Ohio. The landscape of these tournaments shifted over the weekend.
Parents Face High Costs
Kevin Brandt, a father from Leipsic, OH, is no stranger to the expenses associated with AAU basketball. He often pays more to attend games than he would for NBA tickets. His daughter plays for a leading travel team in the Midwest, which comes with its own financial demands.
However, the experience at the Spooky Nook complex in Hamilton left Brandt confused. The situation was not what he had anticipated.
Just got home from watching my daughter play in AAU Tournament, Select Showcase. $260 for my wife and I to watch her play this weekend. $260 to get in. Someone HAS to feel a little guilty about this, don’t they?Brandt expressed this sentiment following the weekend’s events at Spooky Nook.
Lack of Weekend Pass Options
Typically, these tournaments provide a pass ranging from $70 to $90 for full access. Brandt reported that this option was unavailable in Hamilton. They were informed they had to pay separate admission for two different tournaments at the same facility. The events were titled the Select Events Super Showcase and the Midwest Summer Classic, organized by the same entity.
Brandt explained, They told us it was (two) ‘separate’ events. Paid $120 for each event. Then $5 a day for parking.
This meant additional expenses for his family.
The family had to travel back and forth due to expensive local hotel accommodations, adding another layer to their expenditures.
Broader Concerns Among Parents
The issue of rising costs is not limited to Ohio. Mookie Edmond, another AAU parent, reported similar experiences in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Her tournament offered a weekend pass for $90, markedly lower than Brandt’s experience.
Edmond expressed resilience, stating, At the end of the day, we are going to invest in our child,
emphasizing the priority of supporting her child’s athletic pursuits despite the cost. Her family incurred around $1,500 for a weekend, covering additional costs like hotels, gas, and meals.
These events highlight an ongoing concern among parents regarding the financial burden of supporting young athletes in competitive settings.
