James Franklin begins his inaugural season as head coach of the Virginia Tech Hokies with a positive outlook. He appreciates the direction his team is moving toward.
Franklin has brought along 12 former players from Penn State to Blacksburg. This addition has contributed to Virginia Tech’s ranking as the No. 7 transfer portal class. The team also benefits from returning talent, strengthened by Brent Pry’s return as the defensive coordinator.
At the ACC Media Days held on Thursday, Franklin shared his confidence after his first offseason with the Hokies. He conveyed his thoughts through college football insider Brett McMurphy of On3 Sports. “We have won the offseason. We have had a great offseason,” Franklin stated.
“We are bigger, we are stronger, we are faster than we have been,” Franklin emphasized. “There’s no doubt about that. We’ve won the offseason. That’s a great soundbite. The reality is we’ve got to make sure those things translate to the season.”
Franklin’s time at Penn State ended after a 3-3 start to the 2025 season, although he had achieved at least ten victories in each of the previous three seasons. Meanwhile, Virginia Tech is aiming to improve from their three-win season in 2025.
The Hokies, under Franklin’s guidance, will kick off their 2026 season against VMI on September 5.
