The Philadelphia Phillies have made a decisive move by appointing Don Mattingly as their permanent manager. The decision follows the team’s choice to part ways with Rob Thomson mid-season, offering Mattingly an interim role. Despite a challenging journey, Mattingly managed to steer the Phillies towards improvement, although they eventually succumbed to the Atlanta Braves in the National League Wild Card Series.
In a significant announcement, the Phillies revealed on Wednesday their intention to remove Mattingly’s interim status, committing to him through a two-year contract. This move marks Mattingly’s third managerial role, having previously led the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins. Notably, he served as bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays from 2023 until 2025, a period that included their pennant-winning season.
Mattingly’s extensive experience in professional baseball began in 1979. Despite never securing a World Series victory, he reached the 2025 Fall Classic with the Blue Jays. His connection to the Phillies extends beyond the field, with his son, Preston, holding the position of general manager.
Under Mattingly’s interim leadership, the Phillies transformed a bleak 9-19 record into a strong 73-45 run over 118 games. However, they faced challenges, dropping five of the last 15 games. As the Phillies move forward, their roster remains formidable with key players like Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and Kyle Schwarber firmly in place. Additionally, pitchers Aaron Nola and Christopher Sanchez have contracts extending for several years.
While the Phillies have experienced consistent playoff appearances, their World Series pursuits have faltered since reaching the finals in 2022. They suffered defeats in subsequent NLCS, NLDS rounds, and the recent Wild Card Series. Still, with Mattingly at the helm, Philadelphia aims to harness their strong core for future triumphs.
