Georgia Senate Debate Highlights Ossoff’s Position on Presidential Bid

Incumbent Senator Jon Ossoff, a Democrat from Georgia, clarified his position on a potential 2028 presidential run during a Tuesday night debate. Ossoff reiterated his stance during the Georgia U.S. Senate debate held by the Atlanta Press Club at Georgia Public Broadcasting studios.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution chief political reporter Greg Bluestein questioned Ossoff, asking whether he would commit to serving his entire six-year term if re-elected, given rumors of his presidential aspirations. Ossoff affirmed, “Yes, I will. I have zero interest in running for president. I’m not running for president. I’m running for re-election to the Senate.”

During the debate, Republican challenger Rep. Mike Collins contested Ossoff’s statement, suggesting that Ossoff is indeed running for president and associating him with the Democratic Socialists of America. Collins, a Georgia congressman since 2023, is competing against Ossoff in the upcoming election.

Ossoff has been serving in the U.S. Senate since 2021. He has received support from former President Barack Obama, while President Donald Trump has endorsed Collins.

The Peach State, currently led by a Republican governor, has shown mixed political preferences in recent presidential elections. It voted for Trump in 2016 and 2024, while supporting Joe Biden in 2020.
