Senate Minority Leader Schumer Focuses on Trump Address Amid Gallego Scandal

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, chose not to comment on the recent scandal involving a member of his party. Instead, he concentrated on his critique of President Donald Trump’s scheduled prime-time address concerning foreign interference in the 2020 election.

The New York Post reported that Senator Ruben Gallego, a Democrat from Arizona, had sexual relationships with two Democratic House staffers not directly working for him while he served in the House. Under House rules, no restrictions exist on members dating staffers outside their office. Sources indicated that the relationships took place while Gallego was unmarried.

Ethics Panel Clears Gallego

When asked about the scandal, Schumer mentioned his planned speech against Trump’s address, saying, “I’m not — I’m focused on this right now.” This remark came as Gallego continued to face media attention amid discussions about a potential 2028 presidential run. The Post noted that Gallego admitted to the relationships, which were with aides to Texas Democrats.

When approached by the press concerning these allegations, Gallego stated, “I’m not going to engage in gossip.” His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Gallego’s Connections and Allegations

The report emerged as Gallego dealt with public scrutiny over his former association with ex-Representative Eric Swalwell. Swalwell resigned from the House amid accusations of sexual assault, rape, and harassment, which he denied. Gallego quickly distanced himself from Swalwell, claiming their close relationship affected his judgment regarding persistent rumors about Swalwell in Washington, D.C.

To manage the aftermath of the scandals surrounding Swalwell and a dismissed Senate Ethics probe, Gallego reportedly employed former President Joe Biden’s deputy press secretary for crisis communications.

Senate Ethics Probe Dismissed

The ethics probe, initiated by Representative Anna Paulina Luna, a Florida Republican, accused Gallego of sexual misconduct and campaign finance violations. The Senate Ethics Committee dismissed the case last month. Gallego stated that the committee’s decision “reaffirms what I have said about these accusations from the beginning: they were right-wing conspiracies peddled by far-right activists like Anna Paulina Luna, the White House, and their allies.”

In response to the latest allegations, Luna commented on social media, expressing disbelief at the “conspiracy theories” claim and calling on Gallego to resign, referring to him as a “creep.”
