Caitlin Clark’s Influence Sparks Debate: NBA Commissioner Weighs In

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has addressed the ongoing discussions surrounding WNBA officiating and Caitlin Clark. In a recent conversation, Silver remarked that Clark has become a ‘political football’ amid debates about physical play in the league. This conversation was sparked by an incident involving Clark and Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas.

Silver stated that the issues surrounding Clark are not primarily focused on officiating. He emphasized that a specific incident involving Clark is not merely about whether a foul should have been called or categorized as flagrant upon review.

These comments were made at the Game Plan Summit, presented by CNBC and Boardroom, during Silver’s onstage conversation with Andrew Ross Sorkin.

“I have come to know Caitlin really well,” Silver noted. “She’s an incredible player and also an incredible person. She wants to focus on being the best player she can. She has unintentionally become a political football in the country, and I find it immensely unfair to her. The issue isn’t primarily about officiating; instead, it’s political ping-pong with her as she tries to hone her skills.”

The incident mentioned by Silver occurred on June 24 during a game between the Fever and Mercury. Thomas made contact with Clark’s throat with her fist in the second quarter. At that time, Thomas was not called for a foul, but the league later classified the play as a flagrant foul and suspended her for one game due to ‘recklessly making contact with her fist.’ Thomas later claimed the play was accidental, expressing distress over receiving death threats and racial slurs. She also criticized WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert for inadequate protection for players.

Clark and Fever coach Stephanie White have denounced these threats directed at Thomas. Since Clark joined the league, she has contributed to a significant increase in WNBA ticket sales and television ratings. Despite this success, discussions about Clark often involve polarizing topics such as race, officiating, and politics.

Silver concluded, “It’s not fair to Clark that one foul has escalated into a separate storyline. There is no doubt that improving WNBA officiating is necessary.”
