Documents released by the Trump administration intended to support the president’s claims fell short of backing his most assertive statements. President Trump made exaggerated claims about election vulnerabilities during a speech at the White House on Thursday.
President Trump stated his address aimed to build public confidence in American elections. However, he spent much of his speech casting doubt on them. A theme of a broken election system has been a common refrain from Mr. Trump since early 2016.
Great damage has been done to our country, the president said. Our elections were left vulnerable to being rigged and stolen, and the trust of the American people was lost. This cannot be allowed to continue.
Yet, documents released by Mr. Trump to support his claims, alongside previous assessments from the intelligence community, do not substantiate his most aggressive election security statements. Some documents even reach the opposite conclusion.
The documents do not provide significant new insights into the vulnerabilities of election systems. One document, available on the White House website, clearly stated, “We assess that vote tabulation systems would be difficult to manipulate on a wide enough scale to compromise election results.”
Takeaways from Trump’s Prime-Time Speech
Trump called for enhancing protections he has previously dismantled. He emphasized fixing vulnerabilities in electronic voting systems to prevent future stolen elections.
Trump said, If you look at voting today, it’s in such bad shape in so many states,
and promised commitments to fix the issues by working with states and local jurisdictions to address known technical vulnerabilities before the midterm elections.
