In her early twenties, Jacklyn Nusbaum began contemplating her future and decided to explore joining the military. At 23, amid an enthusiastic beginning in 2010, she underwent comprehensive medical testing, including the then-new mouth swab HIV test.
This test, known for its rapid results, revealed that she was HIV positive, a result confirmed via blood testing a week later. Jacklyn felt devastated, grappling with fear of being ostracized and pondering how to move forward.
Her brother played a crucial supportive role. By providing emotional comfort, he helped Jacklyn begin coping with her diagnosis. Yet, truly coming to terms with it took years, culminating around 2019. After navigating a challenging personal relationship, she committed to focusing on health and personal growth.
Jacklyn established a daily routine that includes exercise, healthy eating, and positive affirmations. Essential to her health is antiretroviral therapy, medication suppressing the virus that ensures she remains healthy and prevents transmission. To dispel outdated perceptions of HIV as a life-ending condition, Jacklyn openly shares her story and promotes awareness that HIV is manageable with proper treatment.
Jacklyn stresses that while HIV presents challenges, life continues with joy and fulfillment. She teaches her children about her diagnosis thoughtfully, empowering them with understanding and openness. Despite facing stigma, Jacklyn stands resilient, enlightening others about HIV’s realities.
Jacklyn resides in Minnesota with her two children and leverages platforms like TikTok to educate and raise awareness about her experience, fostering community understanding of living with HIV.
