Queen Camilla has always been a central figure in King Charles’ life, considered ‘non-negotiable’ by the monarch, according to British author Catherine Mayer in her book, Divide & Rule. Released ahead of Queen Camilla’s birthday on July 17, the book examines Camilla’s journey as a royal wife.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson declined to comment on the book. The relationship between Charles and Camilla faced scrutiny, particularly after Princess Diana’s death. Mayer notes that Charles believed Camilla was the only woman capable of truly supporting him.
“The non-negotiability came into play after the divorce and Diana’s passing,” Mayer told Fox News Digital. “Charles felt he needed her support, and Camilla has always been ready to provide that.”
Camilla’s influence on Charles is evident. Mayer, who once followed Charles for a biography, observed the change Camilla brought to him. She noted an instant improvement in his demeanor upon her arrival.

As pressures mounted, Charles began dating Lady Diana Spencer, fitting the profile of a traditional queen. Charles and Diana’s 1981 marriage failed to deter his connection with Camilla, resuming in the mid-1980s despite both being married with families.
Mayer suggests Diana knew about the enduring dynamics, having confronted Camilla on the matter. Diana famously acknowledged the complexities in a Panorama interview, sharing her sense of competition within the marriage.
Charles and Diana’s separation in 1992 and eventual divorce in 1996 preceded Diana’s tragic death in 1997. Charles married Camilla in 2005, sealing her acceptance into royal life. Charles’ ascension to king in 2023 marked Camilla’s coronation as queen.
