Phillies vs. Mets Game Played Amid Unhealthy Air Quality Due to Wildfires

Major League Baseball faced challenging conditions in its first game after the All-Star break, played in Philadelphia. The New York Mets visited the Philadelphia Phillies with air quality marked as ‘unhealthy’ due to Canadian wildfires. The air quality index reached 196, while other Northeast and Midwest areas approached 500, classified as hazardous.

Efforts to address the air issues began with the decision to start the game an hour earlier than initially planned. This adjustment, announced around 4 p.m. ET, shifted the game’s start to 6:10 p.m.

The sun’s orange hue, visible from the stadium, was a reminder of the conditions. Mets infielder Brett Baty noted a noticeable change in air quality during the final innings, mentioning eye irritation. His teammate, Carson Benge, compared the experience to being near a campfire. Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez and pitcher Christian Scott also experienced discomfort, such as visibility challenges and a sensation of physical strain.

Phillies player Bryce Harper candidly remarked, while mic’d during the ESPN broadcast, that playing in such conditions was not ideal. Pitcher Aaron Nola echoed similar feelings regarding the ‘smoky’ atmosphere.

Interim managers Don Mattingly and Andy Green agreed that the gameplay remained mostly unaffected. However, they credited umpire Dan Iassogna for vigilantly monitoring the air quality. Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh appreciated the umpires’ concerns for player safety, noting frequent checks with players about their condition.

Players did not engage in outdoor batting practice. Mattingly mentioned limiting outdoor time as much as possible. The teams are set to continue their series after a day’s break, with no changes in the schedule. The Mets won the game 4-1.

On the same day, an MLS game in Chicago was postponed due to similar air quality issues. Expectations are that conditions will improve, essential for the upcoming World Cup final between Argentina and Spain at MetLife Stadium.
