President Trump Threatens Tariffs Over Canadian Wildfire Smoke

President Trump expressed his frustration on Friday over Canada’s handling of its wildfire response, which has resulted in smoke blanketing several U.S. cities, including New York and Chicago. He suggested imposing tariffs on Canada to compensate for the negative impacts of the smoke on American cities.

In a social media post, Trump criticized the air quality resulting from the wildfires, calling it dangerous and unacceptable. He planned to discuss the matter with Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada on Saturday.

The widespread smoke originates from nearly 200 wildfires in Ontario, affecting millions of Canadians and triggering the evacuation of numerous communities. This situation has also led to poor air quality in various U.S. cities like New York, Detroit, and Washington.

Prime Minister Carney responded indirectly to U.S. criticism, suggesting the need for America to increase its efforts against climate change. This, according to scientists, contributes to more frequent and intense wildfires. Carney did not immediately comment on Trump’s post.

Ontario’s Premier, Doug Ford, expressed his frustration with the criticism from U.S. lawmakers. Ford highlighted Ontario’s history of assisting during American disasters, including having water bombers ready during California wildfires. He urged American politicians to offer support rather than complain.
