Cynthia Nixon Appointed to New York Judicial Selection Committee

Progressive activist and actress Cynthia Nixon has joined the Commission on Judicial Nomination in New York. The commission, which helps select candidates for the state’s Court of Appeals, only allows appointments approved by its panel. Nixon’s term on the commission will last four years, ending on April 30, 2030.

Republican lawmakers have voiced concerns about her appointment. Ranking Member Anthony Palumbo of the Senate Judiciary Committee expressed disappointment, questioning the decision to appoint a celebrity activist without a law degree. Chief Judge Rowan Wilson made the appointment that sparked this criticism.

Nixon, a former Democratic gubernatorial candidate in 2018, is actively involved in several social issues, including abortion access, public school funding, and LGBTQ rights. Her biography on the New York State website emphasizes her long career in acting, starting when she was 12.

Nixon is widely recognized for her role as lawyer Miranda Hobbes in HBO’s “Sex and the City.” While most commission members possess legal backgrounds, possessing a law degree is not a requirement for serving on the panel.

The commission ensures New York’s highest court judges are selected from diverse and qualified candidates. The state Constitution mandates that the Governor must choose judges from the commission’s nominees. Legal expert Jonathan Turley criticized the legal system for this decision, noting the irony of appointing an actress known for portraying a lawyer.

Nixon, who lost the 2018 Democratic gubernatorial primary to Andrew Cuomo, aligns herself with democratic socialist principles. She supports health care, housing, and education as basic rights. Previously, she endorsed New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, expressing admiration for his leadership.
