North Aurora’s Riverfront Park took on a lively atmosphere Saturday morning as four-legged participants stole the spotlight. Starting at 10 a.m., the village hosted its second Dog Days of Summer event featuring a pet parade and pet-themed vendor market. Residents like Katrina Keilty enjoyed the scenic park by the Fox River with her dog Duncan, a Wooly Siberian Husky with distinctive long fur and two different colored eyes. Duncan competed for ‘most unique’ pet, as his appearance often surprises people who meet him.
Natalie Stevens, community relations coordinator for North Aurora, recalled how the pet parade used to be part of the village’s North Aurora Days festival. After a hiatus, the village decided to organize the parade themselves. Participants in the pet parade had various categories to choose from, including cutest pet, owner-pet dress-alike, biggest and smallest pet, most unusual pet, and best trick. Prizes, including trophies and gift cards to pet supply stores, were up for grabs.
Local vendors showcased products such as handmade dog treats, clothing, and custom pet portraits. The festival also featured local pet businesses, including dog daycare, pet supply stores, and rescue groups with adoptable dogs. Despite smoke from Canadian wildfires potentially deterring attendees, those present were enthusiastic about presenting their pets.
One participant, Lore Solano, brought her mini-long-haired dachshund Dolce, who sports a cream color that’s nearly white—an unusual trait. Solano entered Dolce into the costume contest, dressing her as a princess. Another attendee, Anna Califf from Westchester, was torn on which category to enter her Chihuahua, Lady Lucy, who has a history of winning contests.
While only dogs participated in the parade, other pets were welcome at the event. Laura McCoy considered bringing Caramel, her rescue dog, but also had frogs and toads to think about. Ultimately, she felt the amphibians wouldn’t enjoy the festivities.
The event, covered by freelance reporter David Sharos for The Beacon-News, celebrated the community’s love for pets and fostered local engagement around North Aurora’s pet-loving residents.
