A bald eagle rescued near Big Bear over the weekend is likely Jackie, a member of the popular eagle pair featured in a long-running nest livestream, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley, the wildlife nonprofit managing the camera. Videos and pictures from rescuers and the public suggest the rescued eagle is probably Jackie. The organization shared on social media that she is receiving necessary care in a facility.
The adult female eagle was spotted near Dana Point Park on Thursday and Friday. This park is located in Fawnskin, adjacent to Big Bear Lake. Witnesses reported seeing the eagle engaged in a fight with two sub-adult eagles while on the ground. Although Jackie managed to defend herself with her talons, cell phone video showed she couldn’t fly away for a long distance, according to the organization.
Jackie has been missing from the nest for several days. She has been a key figure on the webcam reality show since 2015, closely watched by fans as she and her mate, Shadow, have faced both the loss of eggs and successful raising of eaglets. Their young eaglets, Sandy and Luna, took their first flights late last month.
The L.A. County Parks and Recreation San Dimas Raptor Rescue picked up the grounded bald eagle on Saturday. They confirmed the eagle was transferred to a specialized rehabilitation facility for care. News of the injured bird worried fans online. Friends of Big Bear Valley cautioned against speculation or misinformation about the incident and advised against contacting the rescue agency, citing resource limitations.
Concerned fans took to social media expressing their emotions. One commenter was sure the eagle was Jackie, having watched her for two years. After the confirmation that the eagle is believed to be Jackie, another hopeful reply wished for her swift recovery and return to her family.
