On Sunday, President Donald Trump commended the grocery chain Giant Eagle for its decision to reduce prices on over 300 products this summer. Rising costs pose a significant issue for Americans, potentially impacting Republicans in the upcoming midterms.
“Wonderful news! I have just been informed that Giant Eagle, a GREAT American Grocery Company, will be lowering prices, by a lot, across more than 300 products this Summer, through Labor Day, to help hardworking American families,” Trump announced on Truth Social. He highlighted Giant Eagle’s efforts as significant moves similar to other retail giants. “Giant Eagle, like Walmart, is stepping up in a big and bold way to answer my call to lower costs for working families,” he added.
Starting July 9, Giant Eagle implemented price reductions on over 300 items, including essential meals and snacks, with the promotional period running from July 9 to September 9. Earlier in the month, Walmart and its subsidiary Sam’s Club also revealed summer price cuts to assist consumers.
How the Iran War Affects US Inflation
Inflation played a critical role in Trump’s 2024 presidential win. He pledged to reduce the cost of living after prices surged during Joe Biden’s term due to pandemic-induced supply chain issues.
Data from a CBS News exit poll during the 2024 presidential election showed that 75% of voters experienced inflation as a hardship, with 45% feeling their financial situation had worsened compared to four years prior. Among those who viewed the U.S. economy negatively, 69% supported Trump.
In October 2024, at a Wisconsin campaign event, Trump declared, “Starting on day one, we will end inflation and make America affordable again. We’ve got to bring it down.” Goods, including gas, saw declining prices until late February when joint U.S. and Israel strikes on Iran affected the global oil supply, causing an inflation spike. By April, inflation surged to 3.8%, the highest since May 2023, before reducing to 3.5% in June, still above February’s 2.5% Consumer Price Index.
This inflationary rise coincided with a dip in Trump’s approval rating, hitting a low of -20.2 in May as per Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin. His popularity improved somewhat following a ceasefire with Iran, though it remains lower than his first term.
Voters’ Economic Gloom Threatens GOP Prospects
Recent polls reveal deep concerns among Americans about escalating prices and personal finances. A July CNBC All-America Economic Survey reported 61% of the public feeling pessimistic about the economy, the highest level since December 2023.
This sentiment poses a risk to Republican outcomes in the November elections. If the Trump administration is perceived as failing to improve affordability, it could affect voting behavior.
Trump urged U.S. grocery chains to emulate Giant Eagle and Walmart in cutting prices, suggesting that such reductions might bolster his standing. “We will continue to bring Prices DOWN, just like Oil, Gas, Eggs, and Prescription Drugs, all of which are dropping FAST after the disaster we inherited from Sleepy Joe Biden,” Trump wrote. “Other Grocery Chains must immediately follow the lead of these absolute Patriots at Giant Eagle and Walmart.”
