A mother in Memphis faces a murder charge after allegedly shooting a man found hiding under her daughter’s bed. Kendra Scott, aged 36, reportedly informed police she acted upon discovering someone under her child’s bed, stating, “I did what I had to do.”
Authorities identified the man as Rodderius Morton. Officers found him with a gunshot wound to the back of his head in Scott’s front yard. The incident occurred on Thursday, and Scott now faces first-degree murder charges, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
A juvenile witness reported hearing Scott shout, “Who’s at my house?” before she entered her home and found Morton under the bed. Police say an argument ensued as Morton exited the house unarmed, with Scott shouting for him to leave.
Memphis Police responded to a shooting call at the 3000 block of Travis Road. Upon arrival, they found Morton’s body in the front yard. A witness stated Morton entered the house through the back door after being invited inside. This witness also reported hearing a single gunshot while Scott and Morton were on the porch.
Documents reveal Scott had previously warned that if she ever found a boy in her house, she would take drastic action.
Currently, Scott faces charges not only of first-degree murder but also of employing a firearm during a dangerous felony. She remains in custody without bond. Scott’s attorney has been contacted for comments.
