New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, during his recent election campaign, pledged to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on a warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) when Netanyahu attended the U.N. General Assembly. However, Mayor Mamdani has since stated that he is unable to fulfill this promise.
This change in position follows an in-depth discussion with his legal team. They confirmed that Mamdani lacks the necessary authority to execute such an arrest as per federal law. The limitations imposed by federal jurisdiction and legal boundaries have made clear that the mayor does not have the power to adhere to international court warrants in this context.
