Before Wednesday’s match against the Connecticut Sun, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham reiterated her stance on safeguarding women’s sports from male competitors. She dismissed recent criticism of her comments.
“I think I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense,” Cunningham expressed to reporters when asked about expanding on her views.
WATCH: Despite backlash, Cunningham remains committed to her standpoint. “I’ll always believe in that. It’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category,” she stated.
Cunningham emphasizes that her defense of women’s sports is not a political issue but rather a matter of safeguarding female athletes. “I’m not a very political person, but I do have beliefs. I have morals, and I’ll always stand on those,” she explained.
Sophie Cunningham, alongside Caitlin Clark, is among the most prominent players in the WNBA. She referenced Title IX as the cornerstone of women’s sports, emphasizing its role in securing opportunities for female athletes. Without these safeguards, the purpose of the category is diminished.
Cunningham dismissed assertions of her position being rooted in bigotry. She stated that defending women’s sports does not equate to harboring ill will toward others. “I extend love, and I don’t dislike anyone. I think there is room for absolutely everyone here,” she remarked, stressing that she has not displayed animosity towards the trans community.
Her focus, she noted, is on protecting biological women and girls.
Clay Travis, founder of OutKick, shared her clip, expressing approval. “Love all of this. Well done @sophaller,” he commented, later tagging author J.K. Rowling in his remarks.
As for the criticism, Cunningham stated, “I really don’t care” about the political labels linked to her views. “If I’m gonna live by the love, I’ll die by the hate, and that’s just not who I am. I beat to my own drum,” she asserted.
