Senator Darline Graham, R-S.C., shared her conversation with President Donald Trump following the sudden passing of her brother, the late Senator Lindsey Graham. President Trump extended his condolences and offered encouragement as she assumed her brother’s Senate seat.
“The president was very sincere in his condolences about Lindsey,” Graham said on Fox News’ Sean Hannity podcast. She added that Trump spoke warmly of her brother, describing him as a good friend and like family.
Darline Graham Nordone was officially sworn in at the U.S. Capitol on July 14, 2026. She was appointed by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to fill her brother’s seat temporarily. During her meeting with Trump in the Oval Office, she raised one of Lindsey Graham’s key issues: advancing sanctions on Russia. “I went on to mention that there were some things that I felt like were very important to Lindsey — Russia sanctions — and that I really wanted to push those across the finish line,” she stated.
Unexpectedly, Trump publicly encouraged her to run in the upcoming special election and pledged his full endorsement if she chose to enter the race. Despite being taken aback, Graham is committed to continuing her brother’s legacy and has announced her plans to run for a full Senate term. “I feel like I can do this, and the meeting with the president, it was such an honor,” she expressed.
In her conversation with Trump, she emphasized her dedication and commitment to her role, stating, “I told him two things. I said, ‘I will work hard, and I’m loyal.'”
