Being named the Heisman Trophy runner-up doesn’t assure an NFL career. Diego Pavia, a former Vanderbilt University quarterback, experienced this reality when the Baltimore Ravens released him. He didn’t reach the start of the full-squad training camp, scheduled for next Wednesday. This situation presents both opportunities and setbacks for Pavia.
Pavia’s release might be timely, as he faced long odds of securing a spot on the Baltimore roster. Undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft, Pavia now has a chance to join another NFL team before training camps officially start. This period allows him to prove himself while aiming for a roster position. Alternatively, if the NFL isn’t an immediate option, Pavia might consider joining a CFL team, especially if a team seeks a quarterback due to injuries. The CFL season extends through October.
However, being cut also poses a setback for Pavia. The Ravens were the team that showed the most interest post-draft by inviting him for workouts and keeping him throughout the offseason. This decision indicates Baltimore deemed him insufficient for their roster needs.
The Ravens made this move to accommodate veteran center Ethan Pocic on their 90-man roster. In their quarterback room, Pavia was considered the third-best candidate for the No. 3 quarterback slot. Baltimore decided against keeping three players in competition for this position. As a result, veteran Skylar Thompson and rookie Joe Fagnano, also an undrafted free agent, remain in contention. Baltimore’s quarterback lineup is led by starters Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley, with no need for Pavia, deemed the fifth-best option.
Despite prior familiarity due to coach Jesse Minter’s connection to Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea, who oversaw Pavia’s college career, none of these factors influenced the Ravens’ decision once the practice sessions began. His performance at Vanderbilt and his status as a Heisman Trophy runner-up did not alter their choice.
For now, Diego Pavia must assess his prospects, either continuing in the NFL pathway or considering opportunities like the CFL to advance his career.
