Former U.S. Women’s National Team star Megan Rapinoe has voiced concerns over efforts to restrict transgender athletes in women’s sports. She considers these actions to be broader attacks on women in society, beyond the scope of athletic fairness.
During an appearance on ABC’s The View, Rapinoe argued against claims that these restrictions are meant to protect women and girls in sports. She believes that such measures are part of a wider campaign focused on diminishing women’s empowerment.
“They’re going after trans people in sports, and they’re using this as a wedge issue because we love sports. And, you know, we don’t want our little girls to be unsafe in sports. And it’s like, ‘Unsafe from who? But okay,’” Rapinoe said.
Rapinoe highlighted a bill in Washington that could require invasive tests to verify the biological sex of athletes, framing the bill as an attack on women rather than a protective measure.
According to the House Republican Caucus, Initiative IL26-638 aims to prevent students classified as ‘biologically male’ from participating in athletic activities reserved for female students, demanding healthcare provider verification of biological sex.
Rapinoe emphasizes the societal benefits of women’s participation in sports. She noted that many women in leadership roles have an athletic background, which aids in building confidence and power.
“They don’t like women in sports because it helps us with confidence and power,” Rapinoe said.
Rapinoe articulated her position in a Marie Claire article, asserting that anti-trans legislation distracts from more critical issues and ultimately harms women and girls the most.
